Adulthood / Growing Up

I recall tentatively talking to a tape recorder as a child, a group of people came to our then small village to educate neighborhood kids about the future. I’m not really sure what their aim was, but I’m guessing to instill responsibility, also to introduce the concept of goals to young minds. They wanted to know what we want to be when we become adults. Right, the what-do-you-want-to-be-when-you-grow-up question that I’m sure a lot of us had to go through. And you’re a kid, thinking, what the hell I’ll just say what I heard from the other kids, because my young mind wasn’t capable of thinking that far ahead. I just wasn’t equipped for that kind of interrogation. We had a police officer neighbor and he was very popular among the kids so I said “I want to become a police man”.

My job sometimes requires me to behave like a “police man”.

Same era, I think. My mom took me to the house of this girl I used to be really naughty with–her mom played host to that little activity mentioned above. And we were naughty for a while until her mom found out that her daughter and I played “house” every chance we could. It wasn’t too bad, I vaguely remember getting a mild telling off peppered with religious bullshit that her mom probably thought kids feared above all else. We didn’t know about intercourse then. It was all just kissing and touching. I wouldn’t say it was innocent at all, there was certainly some form of sexuality dictating our behavior, but we were kids.

We were blameless.
